  1. While cell phones are commonly kept out of the classroom since they are seen as more of a distraction than help, the immense reach of smartphones allow both teachers and students to access an incredible amount of information at any given time in minutes. Outside of being used for contact and social media, there are apps that can be used as teaching devices, study aides, and fun exercises for the class. The benefits of using smartphones in class present a very tempting case for allowing their use within the classroom.

One of the apps that I saw on www.iear.org that I found interesting is the one day in history app. This app allows the user to look up significant events in history, birthdays and deaths on any given calendar day. I commonly enjoy looking up events that transpired on the current date and am often surprised how many significant events happened on any day. This app helps promote the idea that history happens every day, whether we have learned it before or just heard about it through this app

  2. It's pretty interesting that we are talking about cell phones in the classroom right now. Just today, my cooperating teacher allowed the use of cell phones in the classroom to research a multi-media resource for a class project. I have never really seen an app for educational purposes until now since I was curious after reading the discussions. The app that intrigued me the most had to be the praxis II app which feeds questions about the test to your phone everyday for practice. Of course this would be a great resource that students could use for studying with. I completely agree with the ultimate integration, as long as students are able to use the phones responsibly and not distractingly.

  3. As a physical education teacher there are endless possibilities to using the appropriate app's in the classroom. Students can manage there physical activity and energy output through certain app's that are available. There is a lot of assessment going on at all times during a physical education class and these app's and smart phones can not only benefit the teacher but also the students in their feedback and analysis.

The one app that really caught my eye was the Fitness HD app. Fitness HD is an app that enables one to create an individualized fitness and diet plan. There are many different parts to it, from a calorie and macro-nutrient calculator, to a personalized workout plan and schedule that is custom fit to your needs and desires.

  4. I believe having students use their cell phones in the classroom would be great for a physical education environment. There is constant analysis going on from a teacher and student stand point. We always cannot be there to evaluate each students individually while they are doing a drill but if students have apps such as the, Coach's Eye, then students will be able to evaluate each others performance. This will also be good because students will understand the skill that they are learning so much easier when they are talking about what they are doing right and wrong together. The only down fall I see with having cell phones in the classroom is students not paying attention and being on facebook or texting their friends.

  5. The apps that I like were the science app and the Tapikeo app. The science app can act as a bridge that connects science topics to the health related topics we discuss in our health curriculm at the high school level. Which will tie into fitness levels that help improve our bodies that we learn about in science. The Tapiekeo app is great for elementary level because of the story telling and abiltiy to use flashcards to test the knowledge of the students. Young kids love stories and look up to the character we present to them as heatlhy and not healthy. This can help the students make good decisions that will prommote lifestyle changes as they grow up.

These apps are great ideas to intergrate new teaching methods into the classroom. getting the apps to become accessible to the students is difficult if you live in poor communities but as future educators we need to change the way we teach and make a difference in the world by using what these students know best and that is technology!!!

  6. I like the idea of using technology in the class room but cell phones are not neccessary. if we can supply the students with devices that act like a tool to incorporate the app that great, but cell phones are not neccessary in the classroom. We can encourage the students to use the app on their cell phone or computer at home. KEEP Cell phones at home, cell phones are only distrations. we need to find a way to have both?

  7. I really like the Tapikeo app because it has to do with telling a story and I feel the teacher can use it in a creative way to get the students interested.

I like the idea of using technology in the classroom but I am not sure allowing the student to use their cell phones in the classroom is not a great idea. I know from being in class and I love my phone but to be honest when I can just pull it out I don't pay attention to what is going on in class. I don't think the teacher can monitor what the student is doing on the phone.

  8. As the mother of a teenager, I think it is a very bad idea to allow students to use cell phones in the classroom. I think phones are more of a distraction to students than a help. I also think allowing cell phones in a classroom also highlights students who are disadvantaged, or don't have cell phones for a variety of reasons. I don't think we need to make kids feel more like they need "things".

As a math major, I like the virtual manipulatives app. I think that could be very helpful for students looking for a new way to understand math.

  9. As a P.E. teacher i dont really like the idea of having students use their cell phones in the class. Since i want everyone to be active i think letting them use their cell phones would keep them from being active. However i do think there will be a time when using a cell phone will actually be beneficial. Students can use their smart phones to research information about fitness and other things that go on in our class. I think that using smart phones can be more beneficial outside the class. Students can use their smart phones to log in their answers and comments in the class blog.
I liked the Fitness HD app because it allows the students to make their own exercise plan and keep count of the amount of calories that they consume and the ones that they burn. this app would be very beneficial to the all the students.
